The Designing Spaces “Think Green” team knows that if you heat in the winter, or run your air conditioner in the summer— you start paying attention to your utility bills running up as well. To help lower bills without sacrificing comfort— Think Green invited Jonathan Goad, from MyHouseFilter.com® to the show. Jonathan addresses these concerns by talking about the importance of air filtration.
Many people aren’t even aware that they have a filter in their air handling system when, in fact, this is one of the best ways to protect their expensive equipment and clean the air circulating throughout the house.
Basic tips on air filtration:
• Typical pleated filters on the retail shelf claim 90 days, but this could be too long for many homes and doesn’t necessarily offer the best energy benefit. Since the energy used to push air through the air handling system is about four times the cost of the filter, it’s always a good idea to change your filter frequently. We recommend every two months for our high capacity 1” pleated filters. Or you can go a full year with our “One Year Filter” and still save energy and filter cost.
• If you can check your filter and the media is about 50% or less visible through the dust, change it. ( it would be good to show a clean filter and a dirty filter as an example)
• When you install a new air filter, make note of the air you feel coming out of your registers. When that airflow is noticeably lower, change your filter.
• If you have an older house or a household that experiences a lot of traffic from people or animals, you may want to consider monthly or 60 day changes of a standard 1” pleated filter, or every 6 months for the “one year filter”.
Dirty or clogged air filters increase the resistance the air handling equipment experiences during operation. If the air handling equipment experiences more return air flow resistance-- then the equipment has to run longer-- and will draw more amps.
MyHouseFilter.com® recommends the Air Grille Filter (One Year Filter). It’s 5-inches thick—compared to the standard 1-inch thick filters.
