Airing June 23, 2016, this special episode of Designing Spaces® will document the renovation of a kitchen for a woman seeking to rebuild her life and gain independence.

(POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – PR LOG – June 22, 2016) At the age of 19, Maureen Handy was in a car accident. The resulting brain injuries left her physically disabled, emotionally traumatized and with short-term memory loss. She’s been working to rebuild her abilities and her life ever since. Designing Spaces®, the award-winning home improvement show, presents a special episode of Spaces of Hope, airing Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 7:00 a.m. (ET/PT) on Lifetime®.

The show partnered with The Tile Shop to demonstrate how a simple kitchen renovation and brand new flooring can change the life of a person in need. Ability Beyond, a non-profit organization that supports people with disabilities, first introduced The Tile Shop to Maureen. They have supported her in a variety of ways over the years, all aimed towards helping her regain her independence, and believed that The Tile Shop could contribute in a huge way.

A passionate cook, Maureen regularly tries new recipes and loves to bake for her friends, family and church functions. However, her kitchen was in dire need of a makeover. The space was not ADA compliant and the floors, cabinets and appliances were outdated. One of The Tile Shop’s designers, Kirsten Froelich, put together a plan to transform the space into a light, bright, functional haven, where Maureen can cook without limitations.

“When I’m cooking, I become free,” said Maureen. “[This renovation] means I’m able to do things better…I can make the meals and be able to reach for things and know where they are.”

The first step was a visit to the Danbury, CT Tile Shop store to pick out Maureen’s new tile. Kevin McDaniel, a representative from the company, helped her understand how her selection would impact her kitchen’s functionality, appearance and longevity.

Which flooring and backsplash will she select? Will she be happy with the end result? To see the finished look and Maureen’s priceless reaction, tune in to Spaces of Hope on Lifetime Television, tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. (ET/PT).
